Where to eat
The sea is the star of Ferrol's cuisine: cockles, clams (especially clams from As Pías), spider crabs, velvet crabs, queen scallops, scallops and goose barnacles. Other highlights are Capelada veal, raised semi-free in the Capelada hills; Cerdido turnip greens, with their food fair in March; and Couto peppers, a tapas favourite.
Among the sweets are rice pudding and Ferrol cake, known as castiñeira after the chestnut, which can be ordered from the main pastry shops. A popular tasting is held on 7 January for Saint Julian's Day. And during Pepitas Week, there's always the Pepitas "bico".
The city has a strong tradition of Galician wines, as well as Rioja and Ribera del Duero, and its own craft beer, La Ferrolana. Options range from traditional taverns, grills and tapas bars to modern and international restaurants.
